Verdict: no fee, with the cost in the exchange rate

Instarem scores 4.0 out of 5 under our rating methodology. On the corridors we track it usually charges no transfer fee and takes its margin in the exchange rate instead, so the number to compare is the rupees received, not the fee. It is one of the providers in our guide to sending money from the US.

How much does Instarem cost?

In our USD comparison (data as of November 2026), Instarem charged no fee on a $1,000 transfer and gave a rate about 0.5% below mid-market. On $10,000 its rate came closer to mid-market, at a total cost of about 0.2%. That puts it in the middle of the digital providers on the US corridor: Remitly and Xoom delivered more rupees on the day, and a US bank wire far fewer.

On euros and Canadian dollars the picture was similar, with no fee and a margin of roughly 0.4% to 0.5%. In Australia and Singapore it charged a fee but quoted a rate at or above mid-market, which looks like a new-customer price rather than its standing rate. Wise, by contrast, converts at mid-market and charges a visible fee, so which one leaves more in India depends on the amount.

Speed and delivery

Instarem pays into Indian bank accounts and gives an estimated arrival time when you confirm a transfer. That estimate depends on the currency, how you pay and the banks’ hours. Plan on a day or two rather than minutes, and allow longer for a first transfer, which goes through identity checks. If the money must arrive today, a provider with an express tier, such as Remitly, is usually quicker.

NRE and NRO support

Money you earn abroad belongs in an NRE account, where it stays repatriable and earns tax-free interest in India. An inward remittance from abroad is a permitted credit to an NRE account, so an Instarem transfer can usually go straight to one. Some banks handle instant credits to NRI accounts more slowly, so check with your bank if a transfer to an NRE account is held up. The NRI banking guide explains the difference between NRE and NRO accounts.

Where Instarem falls short

  • Rate, not fee. With no fee to see, the cost is easy to miss: on our tracked US quote it was about 0.5% of the amount sent.
  • Limited sending countries. Accounts open only where Nium holds a consumer licence, which leaves out the Gulf, New Zealand and Sweden.
  • Not the quickest. Transfers usually take a day or two, so it is not the choice for money that must arrive within minutes.
  • First-transfer pricing. A new customer’s quote can be better than the standing price, so the first transfer is a poor guide to the rest.

Who should use Instarem

Instarem suits NRIs in the UK, US, EU, Australia, Canada or Singapore who send regular amounts and prefer a fee-free quote. Check the rupees received against our remittance comparison before each large transfer, because which provider gives the most rupees on a given day depends on the amount and the currency.

Instarem FAQ for NRIs

Instarem is the consumer service of Nium. In the UK it is provided by Nium Fintech Limited, authorised by the FCA as an electronic money institution (firm reference 901024). In the US it is Nium, Inc. (NMLS 1528562), with payment services provided by Community Federal Savings Bank. In the EU it is UAB “NIUM EU”, licensed by the Bank of Lithuania (EMI licence no. 14); in Australia Nium Pty Ltd (AFSL 464627, AUSTRAC IND100432795-001); in Canada Nium Canada Corporation, registered with FINTRAC (M15669293); and in Singapore Nium Pte. Ltd., a Major Payment Institution licensed by MAS (PS20200276). It is not a bank, so money it holds is safeguarded rather than deposit-insured.

The consumer app covers 60+ countries, but you can open an account only where Nium holds a consumer licence: the UK, the US, the EU, Australia, Canada and Singapore (plus Hong Kong). NRIs in the Gulf, New Zealand or Sweden need another provider; our AED guide compares the options in the UAE.

Instarem prices a first transfer differently from later ones, so the quote you see as a new customer can be better than its standard price. Compare a later transfer against the comparison table rather than assuming the first quote holds.
